This is a qualitative research paper based on the perceptions and expectations of women. This paper examines the association of women and men in tourism, with particular focus on women’s choices in picking roles, and challenges they encounter based on the roles they perform. It concludes by offering some tentative policy recommendations and an agenda for future research. Combining literature reviews, analysis of policy documents and primary research this paper aims to provide an overview of the potential of tourism to contribute to the gender equality and women’s empowerment, and the tensions and complexities that this presents. Using the third Millennium Development Goal – gender equality and women’s empowerment – as its focus, this paper explores this theme from a critical perspective informed by feminist approaches to development. This paper is a first attempt to unpack some of the issues involved in such an undertaking, and to provide an overview of some of the key empirical areas that need to be taken into account for further research. However, very little research has been carried out into the gender dimensions of this relationship.
Further, some of the laws relevant to the equity in the payment system, the regulations of minimum wages in the travel and tourism industrial sectors should be implemented with the highest attempts.įor several decades, the relationship between tourism and development has been explored in the discipline of tourism studies and in policy-making circles. The women employed in the travel and tourism should be protected and strengthened legally. The potentiality of the travel and tourism industry so as to uplift the status of women socioeconomically, especially in the destinations of developing countries, is faced with some of the socioeconomic issues connected with the women. vulnerability of gender discrimination and exploitation of women, inequity in the treatment in stereotyping jobs, closing up the gender gap in the certain economic activities, the informal economic activities of women in the travel and tourism industry, and over representation of women in the jobs of low status are some of the socioeconomic issues which have been analysed and found in this study. The data and information have been collected from the secondary sources such as the existing literature.
